Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Official TOEFL score reports must be received no later than March 1 for all majors except Conducting. Conducting applicants must submit an official score report by December 1. No offer of admission will be made until an applicant has either demonstrated sufficient English proficiency through the TOEFL or received a written waiver of the TOEFL requirement from the Office of Admission.

Minimum TOEFL Scores: The minimum TOEFL score for undergraduate programs is 61 iBT (500 paper-based). The minimum TOEFL score for graduate programs other than the DMA is 79 iBT (550 paper-based). Students must have the testing service send an official score report directly to New England Conservatory (school code: 3659). Copies and student score reports are not acceptable and will delay your application. We will not accept scores from tests taken more than two years before the application deadline.

DMA applicants do not need to submit a TOEFL score.

Exemption from the TOEFL requirement: Applicants who have completed a full-time,  4-year degree program at an English-speaking college/university or high school may request an exemption from the TOEFL requirement after they have submitted an application. The request should be a written statement of at least 100 words describing your experience with the English language and the reasons you believe you are qualified to begin studies at NEC without submitting a TOEFL score. TOEFL waiver requests should be sent to the admissions counselor who works with your intended degree or major as shown on our Contact Admissions page. Requests must be initiated by the applicant and will not be reviewed until we have received your completed application and transcript(s).
