What do you like about studying at NEC?
"It was the faculty that drew me to NEC. I knew I wanted to study with Carole Haber and that she would be the voice teacher to help me take my voice to the next level. I also love how wonderful the faculty and staff are at NEC. Leaving Stetson was difficult because there was a sense of family in the School of Music. Although the program is more intense at NEC, I believe that everyone here wants to see you succeed and will find the means to help you do so. Through the opera department, I feel that I have grown as an artist and feel more prepared to go out into the 'real world' and be competitive. "
What do you like about Boston and like to do with your free time?
"Boston is just a beautiful city that is rich with history. It is just enough city for someone like me. There are other well-known metropolitan cities that are great for some people, but they’re usually too crowded and busy for me. Boston offers you big city life without the intimidation. I love to go to the movies or dinner with friends. When I leave school grounds, I take a break from music just to give myself a time to mentally breathe."
Can you think of a particular moment or experience at NEC that was memorable?
"There are so many memorable moments. The fact that several faculty members have approached me about the growth they have seen in me; it is a reflection of all of the great instruction I have received."
What are your plans/goals after NEC?
"I plan on auditioning to any and every vocal program that will take me, and eventually make my mark on the musical world. NEC has taught me how to be a young professional singer, and has given me the discipline and knowledge to advance my career."
Reina Powell is the recipient of the Gladys Childs Miller Scholarship.
