Major: Jazz Trumpet Performance
Degree: B.M.
Class: 2013
8:15 am - I drag myself out of bed as "Groovin' High" by Dizzy Gillespie blasts from my phone as it does every week day to start things off on the right "note."
9:15 am - After showering and eating a quick breakfast, I head to the Forest Hills Orange Line T (subway) station a few blocks from my house and start my commute to school. While on the subway I write down a tune that's been running through my head as curious onlookers try to see what I'm doing.
9:30 am - Now at school, I grab my horn and scout out a practice room to warm up in a little before my ensemble at 10am.
10:00 am - Ensemble with Joe Morris, my favorite place to be. I come out after every ensemble with my head buzzing with new ideas and things to try for next week. I call up my roommates and head to Espresso Royale for a coffee before classes.
1:00 pm – Going to Theory class to try and get one step closer to understanding what the heck all those little black dots on the page mean.
2:00 pm - After class I like to take a walk around the city for a bit in search of some place interesting to eat lunch. There are literally hundreds of awesome places within walking distance of school and I'm trying to find them all!
4:00 pm - Time for John McNeil's jazz theory course which is part jazz, part standup comedy, and it's impossible to leave without cracking a smile and understanding 100% more about harmony and, most times, life in general. I head straight from here to my second ensemble of the day, this one led by Joe Hunt.
8:00 pm - Time for a lesson with John McNeil. I prepare my mind to be blown, then I walk in the door. I come out with exactly what I'd expected. Motivation to practice for many more hours that night but unfortunately one has to eat...
9:30 pm - Time to head home and make dinner with my roommates and relax for a few hours with some Tiger Woods PGA tour 2010 for Xbox. Another great day at my favorite place on earth.
