Why did you choose to study at NEC?
“During my undergraduate studies, I studied with Allen Meek, principal trombone of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and NEC alum. I had also heard a lot of incredible things about NEC’s bass trombone teacher, Douglas Yeo, the bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Although I had never previously visited NEC, I knew that NEC would be a great school to study trombone. I would have the opportunity to study with the BSO bass trombonist and attend BSO concerts!”
Are there any pre-NEC musical experiences you would like to mention?
“I began my trombone studies at the Middle School of Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and was a member of the China Youth Orchestra. During my time in Beijing, I played with several professional groups, including the China National Orchestra. As a student in Singapore, I won third place in the YST Conservatory’s Concerto Competition and was a semi-finalist of the Jeju International Brass Competition. I also attended the Canton International Summer Music Academy and the Australian International Summer Orchestral Institute, and played with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Festival Orchestra.”
What do you like about your studies at NEC?
“I love the lessons and mentorship I’ve received from my teacher, Douglas Yeo. He’s taught me so much within the couple of years that I’ve been here. I truly believe that NEC and Mr. Yeo have prepared me to become a professional bass trombonist and musician. In addition, I get the opportunity to play with great musicians all the time and attend masterclasses held by some of the most incredible musicians from around the world.”
What do you like about Boston?
“Boston has become my official ‘home town’ in the United States. I often visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Public library, and many of the historic buildings in the city. Being in Boston truly gives me a sense of being an artist.”
Are there any music groups or ensembles that you are involved in outside of NEC?
“I’ve been very fortunate in receiving many professional performing opportunities here in Boston. I’ve performed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and the Boston Civic Symphony. I’m also going to perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra this fall!”
Can you think of a particular moment or experience at NEC that was memorable?
“My first Wind Ensemble rehearsal! I practiced my part to make sure that I would be prepared, and went to Jordan Hall to get ready. As we were rehearsing, I was amazed by how well everyone was playing in the very first rehearsal. It really was nearly perfect to me. Another memorable moment for me was winning the NEC Concerto Competition and performing with the orchestra. Not very many bass trombonists can say that they’ve performed a concerto with a great orchestra from one of the top music schools in the country!”
What do you do outside of class?
“Outside of class I enjoy cooking, swimming, watching movies, and hanging out with my friends.”
