Steven Karidoyanes

Director, Youth Symphony

Boston native Steven Karidoyanes is in his sixth season as Conductor and Music Director of the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony. Since his appointment in 2004, he has led the NEC YS in their regular Jordan Hall performances, concert tours to Italy, Greece, and Costa Rica, concerts for Boston First Night 2006 and WCRB’s Classical Cartoon Festival at Symphony Hall. This is also his 16th season conducting the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and his fourth season leading Masterworks Chorale.

He recently conducted The Mikado with the Bostonian Opera & Concert Ensemble in Jordan Hall and Cape Cod Opera’s production of Carmen, as well as the South Shore Conservatory’s Opera-by-the-Bay production of Die Fledermaus. Past guest conducting engagements include Hungary's Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Prague (CZ) Symphony Chamber Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and orchestras in the Washington, D.C. region. 

He has held the posts of Music Director of the Boston College Symphony Orchestra, Associate Conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony and Greensboro Symphony orchestras in North Carolina, and Assistant Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Karidoyanes served on the faculty of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for ten seasons and on the conducting faculty of New England Conservatory.
 
Complementing his performing activities, Karidoyanes is also a composer and member of ASCAP. His recent composition, Yerakína: Dionysian Dance for Orchestra, was written for and premiered by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His Café Neon: Fantasy on Greek Songs and Dances has been performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony and by orchestras in California, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Italy and Greece. His cantata, Cherished Youth, was twice choreographed by the Commonwealth Ballet (MA). A classical music announcer/producer, Karidoyanes is a frequent fill-in host for Boston's WGBH Radio, and has worked for National Public Radio affiliates in North Carolina and Indiana.
