Prep students swept the 2012 Harvard Musical Association High School Achievement Awards: Juree Kim and Jonah Park Ellsworth both won first prize; Nicholas Davies and Hikaru Yonezaki both won second prize.
Nine Prep students were awarded prizes in the 2012 Steinway Society Piano Competition. In Division 1 (ages 9 and under), Avik Sarkar won second prize and Hannah Ryu won third prize. In Division 2 (ages 10-12), Niklas Kniesche won first prize and Amir Siraj was one of two third prize winners. In Division 3 (ages 13-18), Peter (Chuang-Chuang) Fang won first prize; Daniel Kim and Yoko Ellie Fukumura both won second prize; and Vanessa Meiling Haynes and Phuong Nghi Pham both won third prize.
Three Prep students were awarded prizes in the 2012 Philharmonic Society of Arlington Leonard D. Wood Awards: Katherine Arndt and Daniel Kim tied for second place; August Ramos won third place.
Prep students swept the 2012 A. Ramon Rivera Piano Competition: Nicholas Griffiths won first prize in the Open Division; Daniel Kim won second prize in the open division; George Teng won second prize in the Rivers Division; and Christopher Staknys won the Inge Holleck prize.
Prep student Alexia DelGiudice Bigari has been selected as a finalist in the 2012 Williams Chorale Bacardi Fallon Scholarship Competition. The final round of the competition will take place on April 28.
Prep student Zachary Haroutunian has been named a Young Steinway Artist.
Prep students Alex Cheung, Kathleen He, Arno Ohlenbusch, and Megan Wong, performed at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall as winners of the International Crescendo Competition in their respective age groups.
Prep student Jung Hyun Noh won the first prize and the A. Ramon Rivera Contemporary prize in the Alice Hamlet Senior NEPTA Competition.
Prep students swept the 2012 Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition: Nicholas Davies and Jacob Thonis both won first place; Jung Hyun Noh won second place; and Yi-Hsuan Chiu won third place.
Prep student Sophia Bernitz performed as a violin soloist in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, April 8, 2012 as a Finalist in an American Protege Competiiton which attracted instrumentalists from all over the world. Sophia Bernitz tours Finland, Sweden and Estonia in April, 2012, with the Madrigal Singers and Concert Choir groups at Lexington High School, performing in Helsinki, Tallinn, and Stockholm. In addition to singing, Sophia is a featured violin soloist on tour.
Twelve-year-old Prep student Anna Larsen was honored with an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for her Piano Concerto No 1. She performed the first movement with the JRO orchestra in the NEC Prep Contemporary Festival in January. There were 670 entries this year, with 8 winners under the age of 18.
Four Prep students were among the winners of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Boston Chapter 2012 Song & Aria Festival Winners: Eleanor Richardson won second place in Division 1A (ages 13-15); Hailey McAvoy won first place in Division 1C (16-18); William Su and Ashley Robillard won first and second place respectively in Division 1D (ages 16-18).
Prep student Amir Siraj soloed with the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra on March 18th, as the 2012 MSO Young Artist Competition Winner
Prep student Zlatomir Fung won the 4th James R. Powers Concerto Competition sponsored by the Boston Civic Orchestra.
Prep student Anna DeLoi won the Lowell Philharmonic’s Jeanne Selander Memorial concerto competition. Anna also won the New Hampshire Philharmonic’s Concerto competition last spring.
Prep student Daniel Kim won first prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition.
Prep student Juree Kim won the Sang Lok International Christian Competition. As the winner she will perform in Carnegie Hall in May, 2012.
Prep alumna Rose Lombardo won the principal flute position of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.
Prep student Jordan Calixto was selected to be a member of the NAfME National High School Honors Orchestra, performing in June at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Prep student Sage Warner tours Germany and Poland with her Chamber Singers group from Milton Academy, performing in 3 cities during the 9-day tour: Warsaw's Porczynski Concert Hall, Aula Leopoldina, Worclaw, and the KW Gedachtniskirche in Berlin.
Prep students William Su, Michael Alexander Gonzalez, and Tatum Robertson won first, second, and third prize respectively in the teen division of the 7th Annual Peter Elvins Vocal Competition.
Prep students Forrest Eimold and Hannah Ryu won first and second prize respectively in the 2012 Ellen Huff Powers Young Artist Competition.
Prep student Benjamin Edelstein has studied both classical violin and jazz percussion at NEC. Ben was admitted early decision to Columbia University. Ben will likely study physics, but he is equally excited about the opportunity to play in chamber music ensembles, the Columbia University Orchestra, and jazz percussion. His studies at NEC have helped foster what will be a lifelong passion for music.
Prep student Sara Barone won the Rhode Island Philharmonic Concerto Competition.
Prep students Lev Mamuya and Tristan Flores won second and third prize respectively in the junior division of the 15th annual Sphinx Competition in Detroit, Michigan. Click here for more on this story.
