Sona Quartet: NEC Honors Ensemble

NEC: Jordan Hall | Directions

290 Huntington Ave.
Boston, MA
United States

Each year, an audition committee of professional musicians and faculty selects a few exceptional student ensembles to represent the NEC Honors Ensemble Program. The ensembles work with a faculty coach and are given an opportunity to perform a spring recital in NEC's Jordan Hall.

The members of tonight's Honors Ensemble string quartet are Joshua Brown and Thompson Wang, violin; Cara Pogossian, viola; and Claire Park, cello.  Their coach is Paul Biss.

Hailing from Los Angeles and Chicago, the Sona Quartet was formed at the New England Conservatory in the fall of 2022, under the guidance of Paul Biss. Violinists Joshua Brown and Thompson Wang, violist Cara Pogossian, and cellist Claire Park are currently students in pursuit of their bachelor’s and master’s degrees at NEC, under the tutelage of Don Weilerstein, Ayano Ninomiya, Kim Kashkashian, and Laurence Lesser. Having previously attended the Curtis Institute of Music, Colburn Academy, and Music Institute of Chicago, members of the Sona Quartet have appeared as laureates in competitions around the world, including the Leopold Mozart International Violin Competition, International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Individually, they have participated in renowned festivals such as the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Moritzburg Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Taos School of Music, and Perlman Music Program.

Thompson Wang is the recipient of the “ex-Krasner” J.B. Vuillaume on generous loan from the New England Conservatory.

This is an in-person event with a public live stream.
