New England Conservatory has announced the appointment of Breean Fortier as Chief Financial Officer. In this role, Fortier will serve as a strategic partner to the NEC’s president, board, and executive team in shaping the future of one of the leading American conservatories.

Trustee and chair of the board’s finance committee Blair Hendrix adds, “With the expertise Breean brings to NEC, we can ensure that the finances of the institution remain strong. Supporting students and faculty with creative and effective leadership is vital to NEC’s mission-driven educational work. On this strong foundation, we will continue to provide world-class music education for students of all ages from around the world, as well as the thousands of community members who learn at NEC each year.”
Fortier responds, “NEC is one of the most inspiring music institutions in the world, and I am looking forward to joining such a dedicated team in the advancement of its mission. In collaboration with President Kalyn and the Board of Trustees, I’m looking forward to helping shape the future of NEC, strengthening existing programs, and pursuing new and exciting opportunities that benefit the students and institute at large.”
Fortier comes to NEC from Northeastern University, where she served as Senior Vice Provost for Budget, Planning and Administration, responsible for budget development and implementation, facilities planning, space utilization, staff hiring and development, and long-range planning for the academic areas. She also oversaw the Registrar’s Office, the University Decision Support function, and a web support team.
Prior to Northeastern, Fortier served in multiple leadership roles for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including Deputy CIO, Deputy Commissioner, and Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Revenue, as well as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Governor’s Office. She served as Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at Northeastern’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and spent nearly ten years at Harvard University in various strategic and operational positions. Additionally, she worked as a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting, focused on business process redesign, organizational assessment, and financial strategy in the pharmaceutical industry.
Fortier earned her A.B. from Harvard University in Government and Slavic Studies and her Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University.
