Liederabend LVIII: Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Dvořák
The Liederabend—literally, "evening of song"—dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and lovers of music would gather at someone's home, and one or more singers and a pianist would perform the songs of composers of the day. In the field of classical music, these songs are referred to as "art songs," and the German art songs are called "Lieder." In Germany, the great age of song came in the 19th century. German and Austrian composers had written music for voice with keyboard before this time, but it was with the flowering of German literature in the Classical and Romantic eras that composers found high inspiration in great poetry, sparking the genre known as the "Lied."
The tradition of the art song composition continues today, with composers from all corners of the world setting poetry in many languages, scored for voice and piano. The NEC Liederabend series presents songs in a variety of languages—not only German—dating from the 19th century up to the present day.
The performers on tonight's concert were coached by Damien Krzyzek.
This concert can be viewed in-person or via livestream.

Арион
Нас было много на челне;
В молчаньи правил грузный чёлн;
Alexander Pushkin

Alexander PushkinArion
There were many of us in the boat;
Some kept the sail taut,
Others in unison dipped
Powerful oars into the deep. In the silence,
Leaning on the tiller, our skilled helmsman
Silently steered the laden vessel;
And I, — full of carefree trust, —
Sang to the oarsmen… Suddenly the cradle of the waves
Was sundered by a roaring whirlwind…
The helmsman perished, and all the crew!
I alone, the mysterious singer,
Cast ashore by the storm,
I sing my former hymns,
And dry out my damp garment
In the sun under a cliff.
A passing wind
Rippling gusts of migrant wind caressed my face,
Voices said in whispers: “Night defeats the day.”
Then the sunset darkened. Rain clouds turned to black,
Somber firs grew troubled, trembled in dismay.
O’er the darkling sea, across a looming wave,
Rippling wind slipped past and raced along the swell.
Night now reigned supreme in the colossal world. Meanwhile,
Far across the sea a fiery eye ignited.
Radiantly in heaven a flower opened wide,
Light was resurrected in the glowing east.
Then the shifting wind blew straight into my eyes,
Whispering with a grin: “The day defeats the night!”
The Storm
You saw a maiden high on a cliff
Dressed in white, above the waves,
When the sea, surging in stormy darkness,
Played with the beaches, pounding them.
While lightning kept illuminating
Her in flashes of scarlet light,
And the whipping wind flew,
Blowing her shawl like wings!
Fair is the sea in stormy darkness,
And the azureless sky in explosive flashes.
But believe me: the maiden on the cliff
Is fairer far than waves, sky, and tempest.

Улетел орёл домой;
Солнце скрылось над водой;
Звёзд не трогал золотых;
Apollon Nikolayevich Maikov,
Я ли в поле не зелёная росла;
Я ли в поле да не красная росла;
У родимой не цветочек я росла;

Aleksey ApukhtinLullaby
Sleep, my baby, hushaby!
Welcome sweet sleep:
Nannies three watch over you —
Wind, sun, and eagle.
The eagle flew home;
The sun set over the water;
The wind, after three nights,
Comes racing to his mother.
His mother asked the wind:
“Where have you been hiding all this time?
Were you playing battle with the stars?
Or just pushing waves around?”
“I wasn’t pushing any sea waves around,
I didn’t touch the golden stars;
I was keeping a baby safe from harm,
I was rocking a little cradle!”
Wasn’t I a blade of grass
Wasn’t I a blade of grass in the field,
Wasn’t I growing green in the field?
I was taken, blade of grass, and cut down,
Left in the field to dry in the sun.
Oh, you, woe, heavy woe of mine!
So that’s what fate had in store for me!
Wasn’t I a bush of guelder rose,
With berries red, growing in the field?
The bush was taken, cut down,
And tied up into a bundle of twigs!
Oh, you, woe, heavy woe of mine! …
Wasn’t I my father’s little daughter,
Wasn’t I my mother’s little flower?
By force they took me, poor girl,
And married me to an old man I don’t love!
Oh, you, woe, heavy woe of mine! …
Whether day reigns
Whether day reigns, or stillness of night,
In dreams incoherent, or everyday struggle,
Wherever I am, to make my life whole,
Is one thought, unchanging, predestined —
Always of you!
With it I don’t fear ghosts from the past,
My heart can take wing, loving again…
Faith, dreams, an inspired word,
All in my soul that’s dear, sacred —
All of it comes from you!
Whether my days be bright or bleak,
If I burn out quickly, destroy my life, —
One thing I know: to the grave itself
My hopes and feelings, my songs and strength,
All are for you!

(The Nymph)
(Dream on a Summer Night)Texts
её заслушавшись, перестаёт грести;
колоннады за ними открылись;
от подушки тихонько руками;
Apollon Nikolayevich MaikovThe Nymph
I know why a secret thought entrances
the minds of sailors by these shores:
it is the sad nymph, her tresses loose,
half hidden by the melodious reeds.
At times she sings about her silky hair,
the azure of her weeping eyes, her pearly teeth,
and her heart, full of unrequited love.
As his boat passes, the sailor, spellbound
by her singing, stops his rowing to listen.
Even when she falls silent, everything on his path
seems to be the songs on the water,
and the nymph in the reeds with loosened tresses.
Dream on a Summer Night
Last night I couldn’t fall asleep;
I got up and opened the window…
The silent night tormented and burned me;
I was intoxicated by the scent of the flowers…
Suddenly the bushes rustled beneath my window,
and the curtains flew open —
A youth came flying to me,
his face shining like the moon.
The door to my room opened,
revealing colonnades beyond;
in pyramids of roses, strings of lights
shone in alabaster vases…
My wondrous visitor approached my bed,
and spoke with a meek smile:
“Why do you dive into your pillow,
like a startled fish before me?
Look! I am a god of visions and daydreams,
the secret friend of a shy girl…
And I have brought the bliss of the heavens
to you, my queen!”
He spoke, taking my face from the pillow
with gentle hands,
warmly kissing my cheeks
and seeking my lips with his lips…
I grew weak beneath his breath…
Hands opened upon a breast…
And I heard in my ears,
like the distant sounds of a harp: “You are mine!”
The hours passed… I opened my eyes…
My room was bathed in the light of dawn…
I am alone… I tremble… My hair has come undone…
I don’t know what’s happened to me…

Má píseň zas mi láskou zní
Má píseň zas mi láskou zní,
když starý den umírá,
a chudý mech kdy na šat svůj
si tajně perle sbírá.
Má píseň v kraj tak toužně zní,
když světem noha bloudí;
jen rodné pusty dálinou
zpěv volně z ňader proudí.
Má píseň hlučně láskou zní,
když bouře běží plání;
když těším se, že bídy prost
dlí bratr v umírání.
Široké rukávy
Široké rukávy a široké gatě
volnější cigánu nežli dolman v zlatě.
Dolman a to zlato bujná prsa svírá;
pod ním volná píseň násilně umírá.
A kdo raduješ se, tvá kdy píseň v květě,
přej si, aby zašlo zlato v celém světě!
Když mne stará matka
Když mne stará matka zpívat učívala,
podivno, že často, často slzívala.
A teď také pláčem snědé líce mučím,
když cigánské děti hrát a zpívat učím!
Dejte klec jestřábu
Dejte klec jestřábu ze zlata ryzého;
nezmění on za ni hnízda trněného.
Komoni bujnému, jenž se pustou žene,
zřídka kdy připnete uzdy a třemene.
A tak i cigánu příroda cos dala:
k volnosti ho věčným poutem, k volnosti ho upoutala.
Adolf HeydukMy song resounds again with love
My song resounds again with love,
as the old day dies,
and the poor moss secretly gathers pearls
into its gown.
My song so longingly resounds into the land,
as my steps wander through the world;
only through the vastness of my native puszta*
does my voice pour freely from my breast.
My song resounds loudly with love,
as a storm rushes through the plain;
and I am glad that my brother
is dying free from misery.
*Hungarian grassland
Wide sleeves
Wide sleeves and wide trousers
are more free to a gypsy than a golden dolman*.
The dolman and that gold constrict an exuberant heart;
beneath them a free song violently dies.
And you who rejoice when your song is in bloom,
wish that gold would be extinct in the whole world!
*a short, ornate jacket worn by Hungarian cavalry
When my old mother taught me to sing
When my old mother taught me to sing,
it is strange that she would often weep.
And now I also torment my swarthy face by weeping,
when I teach gypsy children to play and sing!
Give a hawk a cage
Give a hawk a cage of purest gold;
he won’t trade his thorny nest for it.
To a wild horse who gallops through the puszta,
you seldom hitch a bridle and stirrup.
And so also to the gypsy, nature gave something:
through an eternal bond, it bound him with freedom.

She is lost in thought. She sits alone, leaning
by the window, her long gaze flickering in the dusk.
And in the fathomless blue depths
of the darkening heavens,
casting their gentle rays, the stars rise
in a silent multitude, a swarm of light
floating mysteriously, as though in rapture,
trembling above her bowed head.
These summer nights
These beautiful summer nights,
Resplendent in the moon’s bright light,
Give birth to vague feelings of alarm,
Give rise to surges of love.
Forgotten is the boundless melancholy
That is bestowed by sorrowful life,
And a promised land of happiness
Is revealed by a mysterious power.
And we open up to one another
Our hearts so helplessly in love.
On these beautiful summer nights,
Resplendent in the moon’s bright light.
The Night is Sad
The night is sad, like my dreams…
Far off, in the wide deserted steppe,
A solitary light is flickering…
Your heart brims with melancholy and love.
But to whom and how would you express
What summons you, what fills your heart?
The way is long, the empty steppe is silent,
The night is sad, like my dreams.
What happiness
What happiness: it’s night, and we’re alone!
The river is like a mirror, all glistening with stars,
And there on high, lean your head back and look up:
What profundity and purity is overhead!
Oh, call me crazy! Call me
What you will: at this moment reason fails me
And in my heart I feel such a surge of love
I can’t keep silent, I won’t, I’m not able!
I’m sick, I’m in love, but, tormented and loving —
Oh, listen! oh hear me! — I can’t hide this passion,
And I want to say I love you,
It’s you, it’s you alone I love and desire!
